MY FAVOURITE PHOTOGRAPHY BOOKS

 

Below, is a compilation of my favourite photography books. In an ever increasing digital world the art of physical photographic print can be hard to dedicate money, time and attention to. These photography books have significantly shaped my photography through the years.

 

AWAY: THE ART OF TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY BY PETER EASTWAY & DAVID OLIVER

  • Written and collated by Peter Eastway and David Oliver, two of Australia’s most awarded and experienced photographers (AIPP Grand Master Photographers)
  • A masterclass in post-processing, dodging & burning, colour control & artistic vision
  • A mix of digital, medium format and film photography on a variety of cameras & lenses
  • Short descriptions and stories behind each shot
  • A diverse survey of Australian and International locations

 

LIGHT: PHOTOGRAPHS BY CHRISTIAN FLETCHER

  • A stunning showcase of landscape photography from his home state of Western Australia
  • Artistic and clever use of post-processing
  • Varity of subjects, aspect ratios and compositions (seascapes, mountains, mining/salt sites, aerials)
  • Bold and accurate colours represented on print
  • Use of long focal lengths and close-up abstracts

HIGH TIDE: A SURF ODYSSEY BY CHRIS BURKARD

  • Surf adventures documented from some unique parts of the world (Alaska, The Caribbean, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, The Faroe Islands, California, India)
  • Incredible mix of surf action, landscapes, travel, documentary and portrait photography
  • Extensive story-telling and in depth reflections on each trip
  • Beautiful bright aqua cover with canvas finish…looks amazing as a coffee table book too
  • Great bang for your buck…almost 350 pages!
  • All round nice guy and a huge inspiration for travel photography…absolutely one of favourite photographers

 

ARCHIPELEGO: SEARCHING THE ISLANDS OF INDONESIA

  • Premium surf magazine/book format

  • A variety of surfers, photographers and locations around Indonesia

  • Superb surf photography in some of the best waves on the planet

  • Variety of shots & photography (action, landscape, travel, portraits, B&W)

  • Print media formatting and layout design

 

 

STEFAN FOSTER: CHASING LIGHT

  • Absolutely stunning and vibrant colours…the best looking book I own, hands down

  • Huge double page feature photos that look stunning

  • Super sharp resolution with each shot and a high amount contrast

  • Huge range of locations within each theme (forests/trees, deserts, ice & snow, mountains, rivers/lakes/coast)

THE REFINED EYE: THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF HENGKI KOENTJORO

  • Only available from the Leica store in The Netherlands…I got it posted to Australia :)

  • Inspirational monochrome/B&W photography

  • 1 x 1 ratio will make you reconsider your composition and use of negative space

  • His work will make you rethink your whole to approach to black and white photography

  • Underwater B&W photography is a highlight

  • Simplicity and beauty in simple subjects

  • Hengki has an obvious pride and interest in his homeland of Indonesia

LIGHT ON NEW YORK: FRANK BOHBOT

  • Cinematic, surreal, moody & atmospheric urban photography

  • An extensive survey of nocturnal sights and scenes around New York City

  • Huge inspiration for night time and low light photography

  • Deliberate use of colour and colour temperature to convey atmosphere and a sense of place

  • Reinforces proper exposure and detail in night time photography

 

JOSEPH HOFLEHNER: RETROSPECTIVE (1975 - 2015)

  • A stunning showcase of sepia-tinged black and white photography

  • Whole page 1 x 1 aspect ratio look superb

  • A masterclass in toning and contrast within B&W photography

  • Huge variety in scenes and international locations throughout an accomplished 40 year career

  • Minimalist design and colour pop on the front cover

  • His photography taught me ‘less is sometimes more’ and to consider negative space more

  • Quite possibly, my favourite book in my collection thus far.

 

THE BEACH BLOG: EUGUNE TAN (AQUABUMPS)

  • Includes a really cool holographic book cover and a stylish hard cover too

  • A celebration of Aussie life by the water

  • Huge variety of photography (sports, underwater, landscape, aerial, portraits, lifestyle)

  • Local Bondi/Sydney focus and some amazing international locations too

  • 280 pages in total! More bang for your buck

  • Great coffee table book too
